The Regeneration of Macclesfield Resorts to CPO

Macclesfield Town Centre Regeneration: The Cheshire East Borough Council (Churchill Way, Macclesfield) Compulsory Purchase Order 2014

Roger Hannah are acting on behalf of a number of parties who will be affected by a proposed Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to bring forward Macclesfield’s town centre redevelopment.

Cheshire East Council have recently confirmed that they will be submitting a CPO to acquire land required for the £90 million town centre development. The move was described as a “last resort” by the Council in order to acquire the remaining outstanding interests.

The CPO is being underpinned by Wilson Bowden Development’s ambitious 200,000-square-foot mixed-use scheme, which received planning permission in September 2013. The development is to be anchored by a Debenhams department store and Cineworld complex, with a further 19 retail units and 718-space multi-storey car park constructed alongside.

The proposed development site is bound by Great King Street and Exchange Street to the North; Churchill Way and Wardle Street to the South; Mill Street, Duke Street and Park Lane to the East; and Churchill Way to the West.

Commenting on the proposed development, Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of Cheshire East Council, said, “The Silk Street Scheme is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to radically revitalise and boost the economy of Macclesfield and unlock its potential. It is a key part of the Council’s and community partners’ plans to regenerate the town’s rich silk heritage, creating a cultural quarter. The Council is also developing its ambitious mixed-use scheme for the South Macclesfield Development Area”.

If you are a business owner or have a property which is affected by the proposed CPO, it is critical that you appoint a CPO specialist to ensure that you are correctly advised and compensated. Please do not hesitate to contact Roger Hannah & Co., who can assist in all CPO matters.
