Significant Uncertainty Remains
MPs are not convinced that Phase 1 of HS2, London to Birmingham, will open at the end of 2026, as planned. The Public Accounts Committee has also called on the government to clarify route and costs for Phase 2, which is estimated to be £7bn over budget.
Whilst the route for Phase 1 (London to Birmingham) has been confirmed and safeguarded, along with Phase 2A which runs from Fradley to Crewe, there remains uncertainty on the remainder of Phase 2 which will ultimately run through to Manchester and Leeds.
There remains significant uncertainty regarding the Eastern leg of the route through Sheffield to Leeds, particularly in light of the recent announcement that the route will now run through a new housing estate in Doncaster which is still in the process of being built.
