The A582 is one of the busiest roads in Central Lancashire and suffers from considerable congestion at peak times. Now, Lancashire County Council plan to upgrade the highway to a dual carriageway along its full length between Preston City Centre and Cuerden. This would also create a complete dualled route from the motorway network into the city. Last year, it was included on a list of projects submitted to the government by Transport for the North, seeking £50m towards the cost of the scheme.

The consultation was held in 2015 and the preferred method of dualling the sections of the A582, which are currently single carriageway, in addition to the route for the A582 dual carriageway, was adopted by Lancashire County Council (LCC) following this.

In 2019, LCC notified homeowners and businesses to obtain views on the consultation which took place from 24 June until 2 August 2019. Following on from this period, LCC highlighted issues with the scheme and developed further designs.

The planning application was submitted for consideration in February 2020. A bid for funding for the A582 widening has been approved by the government to move to the next stage of preparatory work and a formal business case will now be submitted to the government’s Major Roads Network programme.

If the South Ribble Western Distributor is ultimately approved, construction is expected to take around 27 months.
