Acting on behalf of the Site Owner Roger Hannah is delighted to have sold Excelsior Mill to Mulbury City.
The Excelsior Printing and Binding Works opened in July 1870 and with capacity for 750 employees, it was one of the largest works of its kind.
Located in the historic Castlefield area of Manchester adjacent to the Bridgewater Canal, the scheme promoted by Mulbury City and agreed by Manchester City Council’s planning committee, looks to revive the site into a high-quality eight-storey residential development.
Mulbury City’s vision will provide a stunning solution for the brownfield site that is expected to be completed by the summer of 2019, producing 108 luxury residential flats and a gross internal floor area of 10,500m² in a scheme agreed at £26m
Tim Groom Architects were appointed by ‘Mulbury City’ to carry out the MEP and design services on their latest eight-storey residential development.
Practice principal Tim Groom said:
‘The design responds to the distinct Manchester context of Castlefield and the turn in the canal. We have looked to reinterpret the architectural history of the site and the old-fashioned printing trays in some of the ornamentation around the building entrances at roadside and canal edge.’
The luxury one, two and three-bedroom flats are all earmarked for private sale.
James Alderson, head of Mulbury City, the company’s city centre residential division, added:
‘This is an important scheme for Castlefield because it fills in a vacant plot along the canal. It also brings back an active frontage to the canal towpath with its double-height entrance. We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback so far on the design of the scheme.’
